The Chauburj is square in plan with octagonal towers at its four corners. Its exterior casing of red stone has been almost entirely pillaged and the repulsive and ugly brick skeleton has been exposed to view.
The conservation agencies have forgotten that it is an important historical building, being the ‘supurdgah’ (temporary burial place) of Babur. He died in this garden in 1530 and his body was temporarily buried in this timb, viz. the Chauburj, and it remained here from 1530 to 1539, when Haji Begum removed it to Kabul where it was finally enshrined.
Except for a few traces, the Bagh-i-Zar-Afshan has been destroyed and its land has been appropriated.
